James Bond Island (Thailand day 9)
The tour van arrives around 8 with 5 other individuals, a couple from Australia, and a group of friends from Spain. The drive from Patong beach to the Ferry port, is about two hours.
First stop on the tour is the Monkey Temple. Always remember to cover up before entering a place of worship. If a temple was ever on my agenda for the day I always packed a scarf to cover my shoulders and a pair of pants. Lucky enough this temple hands out saris at the entrance as well as they assist you in tying it in an appropriate manner.
The temple was filled with gold shrines and prayer stations, however no monkeys. This was a tad bit disappointing however on our way out we were able to see them swinging above the trees, further up into the jungle.
Our second stop was a boat ride from the pier to a small Village that sits on the river. We were served a lunch of, seafood soup, calamari, stir fried chicken, vegetables and rice. Sitting at a table with complete strangers to share a meal gives you the perfect opportunity to socialize and ease the tension of the day.
After lunch our third stop was to a ported boat in the middle of the river about 25 minutes away from the village. Here is where groups of twos are taken on a peaceful kayak ride through the caves and depths of the surrounding islands. The water is refreshing and the workers make sure to provide friendly service and even crack jokes to keep everything interesting and a great experience.
30 minutes out on the river and you’re back on another long tail boat to James Bond Island. Once you get off the boat you’re greeted by stalls that are selling tiny souvenirs. Once you get around the shopping area you’re hit with a great view of the famous rock and its surrounding water and greenery.
James Bond island isn’t one for swimming or relaxing, its truly just for taking pictures and being able to say you did that. After about 10 minutes you’re over it. We spent a total of 30 minutes on the island and about an hour long boat ride back to the port.
Overall the best part of this day was definitely the kayaking. The view was fantastic and breath taking. The water felt perfect against my feet and the sun kissed the river just right.
By the time I made it back to the hotel I was done for, and after a nice cold shower I slept straight through the night.
